Established by an act of Congress in 2003, the National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum focused solely on presenting the history and culture of African Americans. It is the newest of the Smithsonian’s nineteen museums, opening in 2016 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The NMAAHC uses interactive exhibits and some of its over 40,000-object collection to invite visitors to explore what it means to be an American and how the history of African descended people have shaped their answers.
